About Dr. Jón Rich, DO

Background and Education

Born and raised in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, I embarked on my educational journey with a passion for medicine. This journey took me through Belaire High School, where I had the privilege of participating in the esteemed Medical Magnet Program, fostering my early interest in healthcare. Building upon this foundation, I pursued a Bachelor of Science in Biology at Texas Christian University, followed by a strategic year dedicated to establishing residency status in Texas. My commitment to medicine led me to the Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine, where I not only pursued my medical degree but also served as a class officer, cultivating leadership skills alongside my academic pursuits. Transitioning into practical training, I completed a rigorous Family Medicine Residency at Conroe Regional Medical Center, where I had the honor of serving as Co-Chief Resident, further solidifying my dedication to patient care and clinical excellence.

Experience

From 2006 until early 2024, I was an integral part of a dynamic group practice in Athens, Texas, where I witnessed its evolution. Within this practice, I was deeply involved in primary care, providing a comprehensive range of services including hospital care, in-house diagnostics such as x-ray, lab services, mammography, and other ancillaries, ensuring holistic patient care.

Initially, my focus was on full-scope Family Medicine with surgical obstetrics, a role I dedicated myself to for 11.5 years. However, as my practice matured and my family responsibilities evolved, I transitioned away from obstetrical care towards a more concentrated focus on Family Medicine, coupled with increased administrative responsibilities within the practice. Throughout my career, I've maintained a steadfast commitment to patient care, balancing clinical duties both in my clinic and within the hospital setting.

In addition to my clinical roles, I've been actively involved in various leadership positions within the hospital setting, culminating in my tenure as Chief of Staff at UTHET in Athens in 2023. My commitment to community healthcare extends beyond the clinic walls, as evidenced by my previous roles as a team physician for local schools in Athens and Mabank, as well as serving as a home health medical director locally. Presently, I serve as a Hospice medical director, continuing to fulfill my passion for compassionate end-of-life care.

Currently, I have embarked on an exciting new chapter, having transitioned from my previous group to undertake the rewarding challenge of establishing a new practice within the same community called, Enriched Life Medical.

Inspiration

I have always enjoyed science and math and I had a desire to serve others, medicine was a natural choice. I didn’t really grow up with any specific friends or family members that were in the healthcare. However, I did have multiple personal experiences as a consumer of primary care many of which were emergency medicine or sports medicine related. In medical school I was drawn to the long term relationships with families, the multitude of care delivery opportunities, the challenge of mastering a non-limited knowledge base, and the flexibility to use both my hands and my mind in delivering care. Bringing those skills and education back to a rural area that reflects where I grew up was a prime goal also.

Practice Passions

I have a passion for providing birth to death care to the community I live in. This includes a focus on not only treating illness and dysfunction but on maintaining health through preventive medicine and screenings. It requires data, reports, and reflection on where I am not reaching patients I do see and not seeing patients I could reach.  I enjoy educating my patients about the choices they can make and actions they can take to live long productive lives. I particularly enjoy getting to provide for sports medicine, osteopathic manipulative medicine, and procedural needs in my office.

Life Outside of Medicine

My family and I all enjoy serving at our church and building on our faith. I also enjoy fishing and hunting, raising my 2 boys who I have been lucky enough to help coach in youth sports, working on my ranch with my wife and boys, and building just about anything with my hands. Currently, my oldest and I are rebuilding his 88 Ramcharger and my youngest is trying to be the next great tournament bass fisherman with THSBA.
